Welcome to 2020!!

“I am making everything new!”
Revelation 21:1-8 (NIV)

A New Heaven and a New Earth

1Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth,” a for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. 2I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. 3And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. 4‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ b or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”

5He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.”

6He said to me: “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To the thirsty, I will give water without cost from the spring of the water of life. 7Those who are victorious will inherit all this, and I will be their God and they will be my children. 8But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars—they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.”

I think there are a lot of us who read this and can relate, particularly to the promise of the Lord’s that He will wipe away every tear.  There is something sad about the passing of a year.  We can’t go back, it is coming to an end.  It is over. All the memories made, the children whose little faces have lost their “baby-ness” and are becoming more angular. For some of us, it represents another year since we’ve seen those we have lost. And yet, we have the promise and the hope that He is making everything new.  There is hope! If we have Jesus, we have something in which to look forward.

In Jeremiah 29:11, He declares that His plans for us are good! He gives us a hope and a future. (“For I know the plans I have for your, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future.” NIV)

Much is lost on this earth.  There is pain and suffering all around.  Death and destruction. And yet, we have a Creator who was not satisfied to leave us in this state.  He made a way for us through His perfect son, Jesus Christ.  And to Him we give all the glory.

** For the New Year, we would like to try something new here at Grace.  We would like to work as a body in memorizing and meditating on God’s Word.  Because we know that the word of God is living and active (Hebrews 4:12) and the “sword of the spirit” (Ephesians 6:17). At the beginning of each month, we will have a new verse and passage posted here.  Memorize just the verse or as much of the passage as you can.  It’s up to you! For January, our verse is:

5He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.”
